We host JoburgPlaces Storytelling Dinners at Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE on selected Friday and Saturday evenings. These include the Migrant Cuisine Storytelling Dinner and the 7-Phases of Joburg Storytelling Dinner.

Guests arrive in the beautiful Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE and are shown to their tables to order drinks. Storytelling takes place in the main vault room, while each table of guests are seated for dinner in a separate private dining room or vault booth depending on the number of guests at the table.
Storytelling is presented by Charlie Moyo while the food is prepared by the excellent culinary team of Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE. Themes alternate between the Migrant cuisine Storytelling Dinner and the 7-Phases of Joburg Storytelling Dinner.
The Migrant Cuisine Storytelling Dinner involves the history and stories of the migrant communities of our city and their foods. It is a casual eating experience with six migrant-inspired dishes, appealing to the adventurous foodie.
The 7-Phases of Joburg Storytelling Dinner involves a more formal, three-course dinner with exceptional Global-Afro fusion cuisine and storytelling focusing on the history and future development of Johannesburg.
- Storytelling dinners are open for bookings at R695 per person.
- Storytelling dinners are hosted on the last weekend of each month.
- We are available for private storytelling dinner group bookings on any other date. A private 7-Phases of Joburg Storytelling can be booked with any One Table booking – whether you are a table of 2 or 30! Refer to One Table brochure for prices and info (dinner at R650 per person). Private storytelling for 2 guests at R1000 and R150 per additional guest).

A magical evening of storytelling combined with delectable food. A most memorable evening in the city, discovering the history and cuisines of some of Johannesburg’s most prominent migrant communities. Presented by JoburgPlaces at Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE.
5:30pm: Guests arrive and enjoy drinks
6:00pm: Opening story about our historic building and vault
6:30pm: Asian-inspired starters
7:00pm: Storytelling: Johannesburg’s Asian communities during the Gold Rush and later (Cape Malay, Indian and Chinese).
7:20pm: Two Pan-African main courses
7:50pm: Storytelling: Pan African Migration.
8:15pm: Two desserts are served
8:30pm: Storytelling: Portuguese, Italian, Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern migration,
9:00pm: Formalities end.

Cape Malay-inspired butternut soup with turmeric, paprika, ginger and coconut milk, served in a coconut shell (vegan)
Chinese-inspired beef dumpling with served with Asian greens and broth
(ask for a vegan alternative if required, when booking)
Zimbabwean-inspired sadza (pap) sandwich, served with chemolia and tomato sheba (vegan)
Mozambican-inspired Matapa (prawns with chopped spinach and tahini sauce)
(pre-order a vegan aubergine alternative if required, when booking)
Indian/Ethiopian-inspired Mango lassi served in a pineapple shell
(vegetarian – contains yoghurt).
Mediterranean-inspired baklava with seeds instead of nuts

(Victorian-Gold Rush. Edwardian-London and Art Deco-New York)
7pm: Storytelling: second three phases of Joburg
(Modernist/Brutalist Apartheid City, Decline of City & Rise of Sandton, Regeneration of the Inner-City)
7:30pm: Main courses are served
8:10pm Storytelling: Vault stories
8:30pm: Desserts are served
9pm: Event ends.

Pomegranate Duck with roasted olive-infused country vegetables

Apricot-infused lamb stew with roasted olive-infused country vegetables
(butternut, sweet potato, peppers, onion, zucchini, olives) and dombolo (steamed bread)
Grilled aubergine with chickpea puree, edamame and peppers and roasted olive-infused country vegetables (butternut, sweet potato, peppers, onion, zucchini, olives) with yellow rice.
Chocolate and berry delight

Pre-booking and pre-payment are essential.

We will send you the booking confirmation and payment link to pay online by card. A booking is only secured once payment has been made.

Note that a booking is only secured once we have received proof of payment. Also note our terms and conditions, including our booking and refund policy:
A booking that is not followed by proof of payment within 48-hours will automatically be deemed cancelled.
Any already-paid cancellation will incur a 20% admin charge.
No cancellations or postponements will be accepted within 14 days of the actual booking date and no such refunds will be made.
Should a guest want to postpone a booking more than 14 days ahead of the original booking date, this will be done with pleasure and at no surcharge.
Participation in JoburgPlaces tours, dinners and experiences is voluntary and at the full risk of the customer. JoburgPlaces and Anchorco (Pty) Ltd as well as Charlie & Gerald’s TOWN TREASURE and its guides conducting tours, do not accept any liability for any harm, injury or death that may incur because of a guest participating in any tour, dinner or experience staged by JoburgPlaces.
All tours and storytelling dinner must be pre-booked and pre-paid. We do not accept any walk ins and no booking is secured or confirmed without paying first.
Should a dinner booking have to be postponed due to Covid-19 lockdown regulations, no refund will be available, but the booking will be moved to a later date that suits the customer.

Note that we do not accept bookings for children under 12-years old on any storytelling dinners.
