Our LAST storytelling dinner was scheduled for Fri 26 August. It sold out in record time and by popular demand we are adding ONE LAST dinner for Friday 30 September. There after, storytelling dinners will only be available for private event/group bookings.

For private event bookings, we offer three themes of storytelling:
– JoburgPlaces 7-Phases of Joburg
– JoburgPlaces Migrant Cuisine
– PretoriaPlaces: From Snor City to Tshwanefontein

Storytelling dinners can be booked at any venue of your choice. We can travel to your home, private party or any restaurant/venue that has a private room available for storytelling. Or you can book at our own venue, Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure, where we will handle the catering, bar, and everything else. You can also book any of the venues in our Portfolio of Places, but keep in mind that venue hire, and other charges may apply depending on your venue of choice.

A private storytelling dinner booking at Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure, with catering and drinks, require a minimum spend of R10 000 on food, drinks, and storytelling. If the event takes place elsewhere, a transport fee may be added, please request a quote.

If you book us for storytelling only at another venue (catering and bar handled by others), then our minimum booking fee is R3500 plus transport. This is for up to 15 guests. For audiences of more than 15 guests, our fee is R200 per person. If the audience comprises more than 30 guests, the rate is R150 per person. For audiences of 50 or more, the rate is R125 per person.

7:10pm: Opening story about first 3-phases of Joburg history
(Victorian-Gold Rush. Edwardian-London and Art Deco-New York)
7:50pm: MAINS COURSES
8:30pm: Storytelling: second three phases of Joburg
(Modernist/Brutalist Apartheid City, Decline of City & Rise of Sandton, Regeneration of the Inner-City)
9:10pm: DESSERTS
9:30pm: Final storytelling: history of the vaults
10:00pm: Dinner ends

Food is served in bowls in the centre of the table with side plates for guests to dish up their preferred combinations. This way everyone gets to enjoy a wider array of flavours. A true feast it is!

The entire table must either book ABUNDANT FEAST MENUS with storytelling for R725 per person or LITE FEAST MENUS with storytelling for R475 per person. ABUNDANT and LITE menus cannot be mixed at the same table.

COASTAL GOURMET ABUNDANT FEAST

MIGRANT CUISINE STORYTELLING DINNER
R725 per person for the fixed, 6-coure set menu with storytelling.

A magical evening of storytelling combined with delectable food. A most memorable evening in the city, discovering the history and cuisines of some of Johannesburg’s most prominent migrant communities and the cuisines they introduced to the city.

Typical schedule:
6:00pm: Guests arrive and enjoy drinks
6:30pm: STARTERS
7:10pm Opening story: Johannesburg’s Asian communities (Cape Malay, Indian and Chinese).
7:50pm: MAIN COURSES
8:30pm: Storytelling: Pan African Migration.
9:10pm: DESSERTS
9:30pm: Storytelling: Portuguese, Italian, Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern migration,
10:00pm Dinner ends

BAR & DRINKS
Guests order and pay for drinks on site on the night. We have a fully stocked bar with wine list. Corkage for wine is R95 per bottle, should you bring your own (limited to a maximum of 3 per table, regardless of the size of the group)

We will send you the booking confirmation and payment link to pay online by card. A booking is only secured once payment has been made.

Note that a booking is only secured once we have received proof of payment. Also note our terms and conditions, including our booking and refund policy:

A booking that is not followed by proof of payment within 48-hours will automatically be deemed cancelled.

A paid booking cannot be postponed, cancelled or refunded.

Participation in JoburgPlaces tours, dinners and experiences is voluntary and at the full risk of the customer. JoburgPlaces and Anchorco (Pty) Ltd as well as its venues at Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure and its guides conducting tours, do not accept any liability for any harm, injury or death that may occur because of a guest participating in any tour, dinner or experience staged by JoburgPlaces.

Note that we do not accept bookings for children under 12-years old on any storytelling dinners.
