Today Soweto is a mesmerizing and somewhat thriving part of Joburg, but still fighting the all-to-clear legacy of Apartheid. This tour takes in the captivating Hector Pieterson Museum, Vilakazi Street where two Nobel Peace Price winners once lived, the Mandela House Museum, the Regina Mundi Church, Kliptown Square and Orlando Towers. While this tour deals with the overwhelming, shocking, and somewhat dispiriting struggle against the injustices of Apartheid, it also leaves you inspired by what the people of Soweto has overcome. An incredible full-day experience visiting Johannesburg’s two foremost museums. First the world-famous Apartheid Museum where we are at hand to explain the context and background of Apartheid. As much as this story is overwhelming and upsetting, it provides essential insight into the history of South Africa and of Apartheid as a form of governance. Next, we move to Constitution Hill to visit the series of prison museums, extensively used during the Apartheid times to suppress the struggle for liberation. Both Gandhi and Mandela were imprisoned here as human rights activists.
