Saturday 1 October:
Money, Banks & Vaults walking tour (9am-1:30pm)
Special price of R450 per person

An astonishing walk, taking in the stories of the colossal financial companies that once dominated the ‘Wiser West’. Starting off at Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure with a storytelling on the history of the city, we head to the JHB Culinary & Pastry School, located in what once was the head office of Barclays Bank. We explore the edifices of the historic Natal Bank, National Bank and Volkskas bank before passing through the gigantic Bank City complex (current day head office of First National Bank). Next up is a visit to the erstwhile Johannesburg Stock Exchange at 17 Diagonal Street. Here the highlight of the tour is visiting the historic stock exchange trading floor, still just as it was left in 1996 when the trading floor closed. We then head past the imposing erstwhile Investec and Anglo American offices to Hollard Street – another previous location of the stock exchange and home to many mining giants. Lastly, we visit the current-day offices of Standard Bank, where we descent into the basement, discovering the entrance to the city’s first mine, the Ferreira’s Mine, hidden in a tiny museum below the building. The tour uncovers the remarkable stories of how money, banks and vaults helped shape the City of Gold from its gold-rush inception in 1886 till today.
