Open Studios Joburg

Open Studios – Joburg:
Sat 28 & Sun 29 May 2022

A 2-day celebration of visual arts in the city.
With over 100 open studios and venues to visit, connected by free shuttles!
Plus the greatest after party the city has seen on Sunday afternoon.

If there is one thing the Joburg inner-city is best known for, it is creativity. Almost all the city’s best artists work from some form of studio or creative space in the inner-city. It is from here, amidst the smorgasbord of diverse people and cultures, that creative thought is born – and from where artists observe society, providing social commentary through their creative work.

More than 100 prominent artists operated in the inner-city; spread through studios in landmark buildings such as August House, the Bag Factory, Transwerke Studios at Constitution Hill, Ellis House, Living Artists Emporium and Victoria Yards – amongst others. While it is normally impossible to meet these artists in their hidden, creative abodes, it will be a different case on the weekend of Open Studios Joburg.

On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May 2022, all these artist studios will be open as part of the massive Open Studios Joburg initiative. Art lovers will be able to move through the city by free shuttle buses viewing the art and meeting the artists in the different buildings. It promises to be the greatest celebration of inner-city creativity, Joburg has yet seen!

It is essential to register (free of charge), via the website or Quicket, in order to be able to use the shuttle buses and visit the studios. All the details on the participating studios can be found on

Good news is that both Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure and JoburgPlaces will be part of this celebratory weekend.

Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure will be open on Saturday 28 May as a stop along the shuttle route for the day. Be sure to pop in for a drink, a snack, lunch or to browse some of the art and heritage in our venue.

On Sunday 29 May, from 3pm, the team of JoburgPlaces and Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure will be staging the greatest celebration of creativity the city has seen in years: the official Open Studios Joburg After Party. Hosted at a phenomenal, hidden rooftop venue in Judith’s Paarl (just past Bertrams and towards Bez Valley), this venue offers open-air and covered space to mingle with Joburg artists and art enthusiasts alike. A skyline view of the city, Hillbrow, Berea, Yeoville and Linksfield, with more views towards Kensington and Troyeville, ensures that this hidden gem a must visit location.

A full bar and scrumptious food service will be available, with the party scene completed by on-point   DJs, Castro and MamaZap. Castro is a seasoned music researcher and archivist who has been collecting wide range of music over many years. A music appreciator and innovative selector who brings a rare approach to the term “disc jockey”. Lungile Zaphi, popularly known by MamaZap is a resident DJ at Mangrove restaurant and has performed at A4 Arts Foundation as part of the 2022 Cape Town Arts Fair activations. MamaZap plays acid jazz, world music, hip hop, and broken beats. MamaZap believes that music and the arts give soul to the universe through connecting people and cultures across the globe.

While the use of shuttles and visits to artist studios will be free (as long as you have registered online), guests need to purchase an entry ticket for the after party: R100 online or R130 at the door. Space is limited, so be sure to purchase your ticket online, straightway.
