3A: Pan-African Food Walking Tour (11am-6pm OR 1pm-8pm)
An exploration through the centre of the inner-city, learning about (and tasting) cuisines from all over the African continent – and even further abroad. Johannesburg has the unique claim to fame that it is probably the only city in Africa where you could enjoy food from more than 50 African countries. Add to that the many more migrant cultures, and the food diversity is simply mind-blowing!

We start out at Charlie & Gerald’s Town Treasure for an opening story and drinks, while also enjoying Malawian fish from a nearby eatery. Next, we walk to an outdoor food court with various street-food stalls. Then amble along the Kerk Street Linear Market, famous for its incredible fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, and spices (do bring cash to buy some fantastic food ingredients to enjoy at home!). We also experience the contrast between the street stalls and a formalised, commercialised food court at a banking complex, before delving into more African and Indian foods along legendary Diagonal Street. We pass by a famous ShweShwe fabric shop and then pop into the city’s best known Chinese supermarket (you can buy more food ingredients here) before eating spring rolls in an ancient nearby eatery. We then stop for a beer before heading to one of the best African cuisine establishments in the city, where we enjoy a scrumptious tapas-style meal along Loveday Street.

Food enjoyed along the way includes:
Malawian fish
Spicy Indian Chicken-Tika
Chinese Spring Roll
African tapas meal including Dombolo (steamed bread), pork trotters, samp, and more

Opportunity to taste many other delicacies and to buy food ingredients along the way for your own account. All drinks for your own account.

3D: Urban Farming by bus (9am-2pm)
This is not a foodie eating experience as such, but rather a wonderful way of learning how food ingredients are grown in the city – and buying some ingredients too. In a city with many vacant and derelict spaces, urban farming is showing huge potential in terms of urban regeneration. Whether it is an underused public park, a series of old industrial buildings or even a rooftop, urban farming can bring new life to previously forgotten spaces. On this tour we visit four different inner-city farms where you get to learn more about the challenges, potential and methods used to farm right where the demand for fresh produce is: in the heart of the city.

We visit a recycling business in industrial premises that is also expanding in innovative urban farms – both along public streets and in disused spaces around Newtown. Next up is a rooftop nursery and tea garden in Braamfontein, as well as hydroponic rooftop farms at Constitution Hill where hops for beer are grown, among others. Lastly, we head to the legendary Mama Refiloe, who recently had to move her long-established urban farm to new premises in Naturena, south of the city. Here we learn about the challenges and achievements of her innovative business, while also getting to buy fresh produce, juices, chilli sauces and breads – all produced on site.
