Storytelling Dinners (at Satellite Venues)

PretoriaPlaces Storytelling Dinners

‘From Snor City to Diplomat City
– the story of Pretoria aka Tshwanefontein’

Occasionally, the team of JoburgPlaces travel across the Jukskei River to their sister city, Pretoria. This is part of an initiative to grow a whole network of LocalPlaces guides, tour operations and venues (Town Treasures) all over Southern Africa.

Our first two satellite storytelling dinners will take place in Pretoria, under the banner of PretoriaPlaces and hosted at a private venue against a hillside in Lynnwood. This pop-up space is known as Tommy & Stefanie’s Town Treasure and boasts a splendorous view of the Pretoria skyline in the distance.

Themed as ‘From Snor City to Diplomat City – the story of Pretoria aka Tshwanefontein’, this promises to be an unforgettable and mesmerizing evening. Gerald Garner and Charlie Moyo will unpack the history of the city from its precolonial, fountains valley origins, through to the founding of the modern city in 1855 and the eventual formation of the Boer Republic. Followed by the devastating Anglo-Boer War and the emergence of Pretoria as the administrative capital of the Transvaal Colony and then the Union of South Africa. All the way to the emergence of the city as the undisputed seat of the Apartheid Government, but to remarkably transform by the 1990s into an international city of diplomats, in the era of democracy.

A city with exceptional natural beauty, significant architecture and the most laid-back, countryside atmosphere. A city often underestimated and misunderstood, yet delightfully spectacular once you meet her acquaintance.
